설명Statement by the Staff Representative on Republic of Korea Executive Board Meeting April 7,1999 1. The following statement provides additional information that has become available since the circulation of the stti report (EBS/99/38, Supplement 1). These developments do not change the thrust of the staff appraisal. Macroeconomic developments 2. Recent data provide further evidence of a continuing modest recovery. Although real GDP contracted by 5.8 percent in 1998 (slightly more than the 5*X percent estimate in the staff report), growth in the second half of the year was positive. Real GDP expanded by about 1 percent in the fourth quarter (quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted), following a small increase in the third quarter. Recent monthly data have also been favorable, with both industrial production and wholesale and retail sales rising in February 1999 (month-on-month, seasonally adjusted). However, the unemployment rate rose further to 8.7 percent in February.
